Conjunctions worksheet for class 5

Combine the given pairs of sentences with and, but, because or so.

1. I was tired. I took some rest.

2. She wanted to score good marks. She studied hard.

3. I was late. I missed the bus.

4. It was raining. I opened my umbrella.

5. She was angry. She was upset.

6. I was frightened. I was curious.

7. I consulted a doctor. I was not feeling well.

8. I went to the library. I borrowed some books.

9. She took her phone. She dialled a number.

10. The child was alone. He was frightened.

Answers

1. I was tired so I took some rest.

2. She wanted to score good marks so she studied hard.

3. I was late so I missed the bus.

4. It was raining so I opened my umbrella. (So shows the effect of the action mentioned in the first sentence.)

5. She was angry and upset.

6. I was frightened but I was curious.

7. I consulted a doctor because I was not feeling well. (Because indicates the reason.)

8. I went to the library and borrowed some books.

9. She took her phone and dialled a number. (When both clauses have the same subject and they are connected with ‘and’, the subject of the second clause is usually omitted.)

10. The child was alone and frightened.

Notes

The conjunctions so and because are often confused. So shows the effect; because gives the reason.

  • I was hungry so I ate an apple. (Here so shows the effect of the action mentioned in the first clause.)

The same idea can be expressed using because.

  • I ate an apple because I was hungry.
  • She performed well in the interview so she got the job.
  • She got the job because she performed well in the interview.
