Combine using so…that…

The subordinating conjunction so…that… is used to indicate result.

Study the example given below.

He looked very ill. I felt sorry for him.

We can combine these two sentences into one.

He looked so ill that I felt sorry for him.

Here the first clause shows the cause and the second clause shows the effect/result.

Make one sentence of each pair below.

1. The teacher looked very angry. I was afraid.

2. She was very tired. She could not resume the journey.

3. I was very surprised. I could not speak.

4. It rained very hard. We could not go out.

5. He worked very hard. He fell ill.

6. The children were very excited. They could not fall asleep.

Answers

1. The teacher looked so angry that I was afraid.

2. She was so tired that she could not resume the journey.

3. I was so surprised that I could not speak.

4. It rained so hard that we could not go out.

5. He worked so hard that he fell ill.
