Conjunctions And Relative Pronouns

Just like conjunctions, relative pronouns also connect two clauses. However, there are some differences.

A conjunction merely connects two clauses. It serves no other purpose in the sentence.

  • He is an honest officer. He has earned many enemies over the years.

We can connect these two clauses using the conjunction as.

  • As he is an honest officer, he has earned many enemies over the years.

Here the conjunction as merely connects the two clauses. It has no other role.

A relative pronoun, on the other hand, not only connects the two clauses but also acts as the subject or object of the relative clause.

Study the sentences given below.

  • He is an honest officer. He has won the admiration of even his enemies.

We can connect these two clauses using the relative pronoun who.

  • He is an honest officer who has won the admiration of even his enemies. (NOT He is an honest officer who he won the…)

Here the relative pronoun who not only connects the two clauses but also acts as the subject of the relative clause who has won the admiration of even his enemies.
