Enough vs. Too

Enough to shows sufficiency and has a positive meaning.

  • He is strong enough to lift that box.
  • The boy is clever enough to understand it.
  • We are not rich enough to buy a car.
  • Was he foolish enough to listen to her?

Too

Too means ‘more than is good or desirable or required for a specific purpose’. It should not be used in the general sense of very or much.

  • He is very good. (NOT He is too good.)
  • He is very healthy. (NOT He is too healthy.)

Too … to

Too … to shows undesirable excess and has a kind of negative meaning.

  • This is too good to be true. (This is so good that it cannot be true.)
  • She was too tired to walk.
  • The coffee is too hot for me to drink.
  • The boy has too little intelligence to understand this.
  • He has become too much of a nuisance to put up with.
