Hang, hung and hanged

The word hang has two basic meanings.

We can hang a picture or another object. It is also possible to hang a man. The past tenses are different for the two meanings.

Pictures or drapes are hung, but a man is hanged to death.

Examples are given below.

  • Have you hung the curtains yet? (NOT Have you hanged the…)
  • The murderer was hanged at dawn. (NOT The murderer was hung at dawn.)

Hanger

The hanger is an object used for hanging.

  • Hang your coat on this hanger.

A hangar is an aeroplane shed.

  • The plane was wheeled into the hangar for repairs.
