Idioms Using The Word Event

Here is a list of phrases using the word event. Each phrase is followed by its meaning or definition. Example sentences are also given.

After the event

After something bad has happened it is easy to understand what should have been avoided to prevent that from happening.

  • I think we shouldn’t have trusted him in the first place, but it is easy to be wise after the event.

In any event / at all events

This expression is used to mean whatever happens.

  • I might be late, but at all events, I will be home before midnight.
  • He wasn’t quite popular with his boss, but in any event, the chances of his getting a promotion were slim.
  • The accused was probably innocent, but in any event, it was not easy to prove it because there were solid evidences against him.

In the event of something

If something happens

  • In the event of a fire, alarms will sound.
  • In the event of his late arrival, we will go without him.
  • In the event of an accident, these safety features might save lives.

In either event

In either of two situations

  • I can’t decide whether to pursue my higher education in India or abroad, but in either case I will have to quit my job.
  • He may have survived or died in the accident. In either event, nobody has seen in ever since.

In that event

If that happens

  • It might rain. In that event, the journey will be cancelled.
  • My parents might visit us next week. In that event, we will go on a two week vacation.
