Joining Two Sentences Using As Well As

As well as has a similar meaning to not only … but also.

She has got a bike. She has got a car.

We can combine these two sentences in several ways.

  • In addition to a bike, she has got a car.
  • She has got a car as well as a bike.
  • She has got not only a bike but also a car.

Combine the following sentences using as well as.

1. Trees give us fruits. Trees give us firewood.

2. Appu is intelligent. He is hard-working.

3. Vijay is studying. His friends are also studying.

4. The moon gives us light at night. The stars give us light at night.

5. The teachers were present at the meeting. The headmaster was present at the meeting.

6. She is greedy. She is dishonest.

7. God made great things. God made small things.

8. She is beautiful. She is intelligent.

9. Mark is guilty. His brothers are also guilty.

10. Animals need food. Plants need food.

11. The cow gives us milk. The goat gives us milk.

Answers

1. Trees give us firewood as well as fruits.

2. Appu is intelligent as well as hard-working.

3. Vijay as well as his friends is studying.

4. The moon as well as the stars gives us light at night.

5. The teachers as well as the headmaster were present at the meeting. (Here the plural verb were agrees with the plural subject teachers.)

6. She is greedy as well as dishonest.

7. God made great things as well as small things.

8. She is beautiful as well as intelligent.

9. Mark as well as his brothers is guilty. (Here the singular verb ‘is’ agrees with the singular subject Mark.)

10. Animals as well as plants need food.

11. The cow as well as the goat gives us milk. (When we connect two subjects with as well as, the verb is likely to be singular if the first subject is singular.)

12. Elephants are found in India as well as in Africa.
