Present Continuous Tense Worksheet For Classes 5 And 6

The present continuous tense is used to talk about actions and situations that are happening at the moment. This tense form is also used to talk about scheduled future events.

Form: Subject + is / am / are + -ing form of the verb

Examples

  • am working on my computer now.
  • My mother is cooking dinner.
  • My husband is watching TV.
  • My kids are playing with their toys.

Notes

Use is when the subject is a singular noun (e.g. boy, girl, teacher, student etc) or a singular pronoun (e.g. he, she and it).

  • My sister is writing a novel.
  • He is learning his lessons.
  • It is raining.

Use are when the subject is a plural noun (e.g. boys, girls, students, dogs etc) or a plural pronoun (e.g. you, we and they).

  • The boys are playing in the garden.
  • You are lying.
  • They are waiting for us.
  • We are preparing for the test.

Use am when the subject is the first person pronoun I.

  • am learning my lessons.

Present Continuous Negative Form

Making the negative form is easy. You just need to put not after is, am or are.

Form: Subject + is / am / are + not + -ing form of the verb

Examples:

  • am not watching TV at the moment. I am working on my computer.
  • She is not feeding the cat. She is reading the newspaper.
  • Mother is not cooking dinner. She is watching TV.
  • My daughter is not playing with her dolls. She is doing her homework.
  • You are not working on that report. You are simply wasting your time.
  • The girls are not singing. They are dancing.

Present Continuous Question Form

Is / am / are + subject + -ing form of the verb?

Question word + is / am / are + subject + -ing form of the verb?

Questions are made by putting is / am / are before the subject.

  • Are you coming with us?
  • Is she working for them?
  • Is it raining?
  • Am working on that report?

question word (e.g. what, who, where, when, how etc.) can come at the beginning of the question.

  • What are you doing there? I am washing the clothes.
  • Where are you going? I am going to the market.
  • Where is he hiding? He is hiding in the bathroom.
  • When are you coming? I am coming tomorrow.

Important Notes!

The present continuous tense is generally used with action verbs like talk, play, work, sing, break etc. It is not used with stative verbs like be (is, am, are, was, were), seem, weigh, taste etc.
