Simple Sentence

According to their meaning and word order, sentences can be divided into four classes – assertive, imperative, interrogative and exclamatory. It is also possible to classify sentences into four different kinds according to their clause structure. These are – simple, compound, complex and compound-complex.

The simple sentence

Read the following sentences.

  • Alice is a journalist.
  • They have a house in the city.
  • The school reopens on Monday.

These sentences have only one subject and one verb each.

Alice
They
The school
is a journalist.
have a house in the city.
reopens on Monday.

Sentences of this kind are called simple sentences. A simple sentence has only one subject and one predicate.
