Difference between such and so

Such is used before a noun (with or without an adjective). Such comes before a/an.

  • He is such a clever boy. (NOT He is so a clever boy.) (NOT He is a such clever boy.)
  • I have never met such a beautiful girl. (NOT I have never met so beautiful girl.)

So is used before an adjective or adverb. Note that before an adjective + noun we use such.

  • She is so beautiful. (NOT She is such beautiful.)
  • You are so kind. (NOT You are such kind.)
  • You are walking so slowly. (NOT You are walking such slowly.)

We can also use so before much, many, few and little. Such cannot be used before these determiners.

  • He said that he was feeling so much better. (NOT He said that he was feeling such much better.)
