IELTS Speaking Test - Sample Questions

The IELTS speaking test takes up to 15 minutes. It has three parts: a personal interview, a short speech and a discussion.

The first part of the IELTS speaking test is an interview. During the interview the examiner will ask you questions about yourself, your work, studies, family, friends, pets etc.

Here are some questions that could be asked during your IELTS Speaking test.


Do you work or study?
What do you like about your job?
Do you like your job or people you work with?
Have you ever collected things?
Why do people like to collect things?
In your country, what are the things that people usually collect?
Do you like animals?
What animals do you like?
Do people keep animals in your country? What kind of animals?
What kind of wild animals do you like? Why?


The second part of the speaking test consists of a short speech. You will be given a cue card with 3-4 questions. In one minute you have to prepare a short speech which answers those questions. Remember that you might also be asked a couple of additional questions.

Who this person is?
How do you know him/her?
What kind of risks does he/she take?


The last part of the speaking test consists of a discussion. Here are some sample questions that could be asked.

Are you an adventurous person?
Do you think people now take more risks than in the past?
Do you think people take more intellectual risks or physical risks?
Why do some people like to take risks?
Why donít most people like to take risks?
Do you think the government should support people who take risks and lose?
