The man I saw on the road had put on very expensive clothes. When asked where he was going, he told me that he was a tourist and wanted to get about the town. He struggled to put across his ideas in English. He went on explaining his interest in history but I hardly understood anything.

Explanation

To put on clothes is to wear them.

She put on her coat and went out.

He was in his room putting on his clothes when the guests arrived.

Get about

To get about is to travel from one place to another. Get around has the same meaning.

Though she is nearly eighty, she still manages to get about / get around well.

Put across

To put across is to express your ideas clearly and convincingly so that other people can understand what you mean. Put over has the same meaning.

Good communication skills are necessary to put your ideas across.

Go on

To go is to continue.

She went on talking about her illnesses.

We realized that we could no longer go on like that.
