Are you good at keeping things under wraps?<\/strong> Do you say bad things about people behind their back<\/strong>? English has several idioms for describing secrets. Here are the most common among them.<\/p>\n

Keep under wraps<\/h3>\n

To keep something (a piece of work or information) under wraps is to keep it a secret.<\/p>\n

  • They wanted to keep the wedding under wraps. They didn\u2019t invite even their close friends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Have something up your sleeve<\/h3>\n

    To have something up your sleeve is to have a secret plan.<\/p>\n

      Be shrouded \/cloaked in mystery<\/h3>\n

      If something is shrouded in mystery, it is deliberately kept secret.<\/p>\n

        Behind closed doors<\/h3>\n

        If something happens behind closed doors, it happens in a place where outsiders cannot see or hear it.<\/p>\n

          There are also some idioms that refer to comments made in private.<\/p>\n

          If a comment is made off the record, it is not supposed to be told to the public.<\/p>\n

            On the understanding that you will not reveal it to another person<\/p>\n

              Take someone to one side<\/h3>\n

              To take someone to one side is to have a private talk with them.<\/p>\n

                Behind your back<\/h3>\n

                If someone says something behind your back, they say it when you are not listening.<\/p>\n
