Examples are given below: <em>a great poet, the last bus, the most memorable journey, under the table<\/em> etc.<\/p>\n<p>A phrase is part of a sentence.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I go to church<strong> every Sunday<\/strong>. (Here the expression every Sunday is a phrase.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The sun rises <strong>in the east<\/strong>. (Here the expression \u2018in the east\u2019 is an example of a phrase.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>There are some apples <strong>on the tree<\/strong>. (Here the expression \u2018on the tree\u2019 is an example of a phrase.\u2019)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see, a phrase does not make complete sense. Also, it does not have a subject or a finite verb.<\/p>\n<p>There are different types of phrases.<\/p>\n<p>Study the examples given below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We boarded<strong> the last train<\/strong>. (Here the phrase \u2018the last train\u2019 acts as the object of the verb boarded. A phrase that serves as the subject or object of a verb is a noun phrase.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>My eldest brother<\/strong> serves in the army. (Here the phrase \u2018my eldest brother\u2019 serves as the subject of the verb \u2018serves\u2019. It is a noun phrase.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>I don\u2019t<strong> get along<\/strong> <strong>with<\/strong> my landlord. (Here the phrase \u2018get along with\u2019 serves as the verb. It is therefore a verb phrase.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Seeing a crowd<\/strong>, I stopped the car. (Here the phrase \u2018seeing a crowd\u2019 is an example of a participial phrase.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Knocking at the door<\/strong>, he demanded admission. (Here the phrase \u2018knocking at the door\u2019 is an example of a participial phrase.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The spider is<strong> on the roof<\/strong>. (Here the phrase \u2018on the roof\u2019 is an example of a prepositional phrase.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A phrase<\/strong> that begins with a participle is a <strong>participial phrase<\/strong>. Likewise, a phrase that begins with a preposition is a <strong>prepositional phrase<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Exercise<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Underline the phrases in the following sentences.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. An old farmer lives in that hut.<\/p>\n<p>2. The dog recognized his master at once.<\/p>\n<p>3. There are some flowering plants in the garden.<\/p>\n<p>4. He has some serious issues with his boss.<\/p>\n<p>5. The frog was sitting on the log.<\/p>\n<h2>Answers<\/h2>\n<p>1. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">An old farmer<\/span> lives <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in that hut<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>2.
