(Here we use the simple present tense because we are talking about a general truth.)<\/li>\n<li>Plants <strong>need<\/strong> water and sunlight to survive. (Here we use the simple present tense because we are talking about a fact.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More example sentences are given below. In all of them we are expressing a fact, a habit, a custom, a preference or a general truth.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My son<strong> likes<\/strong> video games. (Preference)<\/li>\n<li>I <strong>get<\/strong> up at 6 am. (Habit)<\/li>\n<li>My parents <strong>go<\/strong> for a walk in the morning. (Habit)<\/li>\n<li>Birds <strong>live<\/strong> in trees. (General truth)<\/li>\n<li>Truth alone<strong> triumphs<\/strong>. (General fact)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We make the simple present tense by using the first form of the verb. Note that this form is also called the infinitive. Examples are:<strong> sing, write, play,\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"><strong>dance, run, work, break, love<\/strong> etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the simple present tense<\/strong> when the subject is a singular noun or pronoun, the verb takes the marker \u2013s.<\/p>\n<p>Read the following sentences.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My brother<strong> serves<\/strong> in the army.<\/li>\n<li>My brothers <strong>serve<\/strong> in the army.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When the subject is the singular noun \u2018brother\u2019, the verb \u2018serve\u2019 becomes \u2018serves\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>When the subject is the plural noun \u2018brothers\u2019, the verb \u2018serve\u2019 does not take the marker \u2013s.<\/p>\n<p>More examples are given below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My sister <strong>works<\/strong> at a bank. (NOT My sister work at a bank. The noun sister is singular and therefore, the verb should be \u2018works\u2019.)<\/li>\n<li>My parents <strong>come<\/strong> from Kerala. (NOT My parents comes from Kerala.
