They could solve very few problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can express this idea using <strong>the\u2026the\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The more<\/strong> wars they fought, <strong>the fewer<\/strong> problems they solved. (NOT The more wars they fought, they solved fewer problems.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note the pattern: the comparative expression goes at the beginning of both clauses.<\/p>\n<p>Another example is given below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When I get older, I become happier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The same idea can be expressed using the\u2026the\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The older I get, the happier I become.<\/li>\n<li>When we go higher, it gets colder.<\/li>\n<li>The higher we go, the colder it gets.<\/li>\n<li>They argued more and became angrier.<\/li>\n<li>The more they argued, the angrier they became.<\/li>\n<li>If you study more, you will learn less.<\/li>\n<li>The more I study, the less I learn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Exercise<\/h2>\n<p>Read the following sentences and express the ideas using<strong> the\u2026the\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. When he makes more money, he buys more useless things.<\/p>\n<p>2. If it is dangerous, he likes it even more.<\/p>\n<p>3. As more information comes in, the picture becomes more confused.<\/p>\n<p>4.
