I <strong>prefer cleaning<\/strong> my home myself. \/ I <strong>prefer to clean<\/strong> my home myself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In American English,<strong> like + infinitive<\/strong> is more common than like + -ing form.<\/p>\n<p>-Ing forms are generally used after these words to talk about things in general.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I like <strong>painting<\/strong>. (This is a general statement).<\/li>\n<li>I <strong>like to paint<\/strong> this scenery. (This refers to a particular occasion.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After expressions like<strong> would like, would prefer, would hate and would love,<\/strong> infinitives are common.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I <strong>would like to have<\/strong> something to drink.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Would you like a lift?\u2019 \u2018No, thanks. I<strong> would prefer to walk<\/strong>.\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Compare:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you like singing? (= Do you enjoy singing?)<\/li>\n<li>Do you like to sing?
