They have slightly different meanings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Congenital<\/strong> means those traits, marks or defects that one develops before or during birth. Congenital defects, for example, are not inherited from one\u2019s parents. The baby develops them while it is still in the womb or during birth.<\/p>\n<p>Left-handedness, for example, is a congenital trait. You are born with it; however, you didn\u2019t inherit it from your parents. Left-handed children can be born to right-handed parents.<\/p>\n<p>More examples are given below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Birth marks are <strong>congenital.<\/strong> (You don\u2019t necessarily have the same birth marks as your parents.)<\/li>\n<li>If an expectant mother doesn\u2019t take care of herself, her baby can develop <strong>congenital<\/strong> defects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Hereditary<\/strong> refers to those characteristics that one inherits from one\u2019s parents at the time of conception.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Green eyes are a hereditary characteristic of Ann\u2019s family.<\/li>\n<li>Hemophilia is <strong>hereditary.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The words congenital and hereditary are often confused.
