{"id":1782,"date":"2017-01-26T15:35:17","date_gmt":"2017-01-26T15:35:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/?p=1782"},"modified":"2017-01-26T15:35:17","modified_gmt":"2017-01-26T15:35:17","slug":"a-half-half-a-or-half-an","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/a-half-half-a-or-half-an\/","title":{"rendered":"A half, half a or half an"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The expressions a half, half a and half an\u00a0are all completely acceptable.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Could I have<strong> half a pound<\/strong> of oranges? \/ Could I have <strong>a half pound<\/strong> of oranges?<\/li>\n<li>Joe has <strong>half an apple.<\/strong> \/ Joe has <strong>a half apple.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, expressions like \u2018a half a\u2019 and \u2018a half an\u2019 are completely unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t say or write:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I have <strong>a half an orange.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that the expression <strong>one and a half<\/strong> is plural.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I waited for <strong>one and a half hours.<\/strong> (NOT I waited for one and a half hour.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Or you can say: I waited for <strong>an hour and a half.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The expressions a half, half a and half an\u00a0are all completely acceptable.
