It is not the same as breaking a bone. When you break a bone, the injury is to the bone itself but when you sprain a body part you are hurting the tissue that connects the bone.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I can\u2019t walk that well.<\/li>\n<li>I can\u2019t move that much because of the leg pains.<\/li>\n<li>I can\u2019t bend my knee that well.<\/li>\n<li>I fell off the stairs and broke my leg yesterday.<\/li>\n<li>My mother has arthritis so she can\u2019t move her hands and legs well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Legs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Use the following phrases to talk about pains and aches affecting the legs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My legs are very sore because I went hiking yesterday.<\/li>\n<li>My legs are all sore because I went jogging in the morning.<\/li>\n<li>I often get cramps on my calf.<\/li>\n<li>My shoes hurt me a lot.<\/li>\n<li>I banged my little toe against the wall yesterday.<\/li>\n<li>He gave me a charley horse yesterday and my leg is still sore. (To give somebody a charley horse is to hit them in the thigh.)<\/li>\n<li>I banged my knee against the table and it still hurts.<\/li>\n<li>I broke my leg last year while playing basketball.<\/li>\n<li>He fell off the ladder and broke his knee.<\/li>\n<li>I think I\u2019ve sprained my ankle. It\u2019s swollen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The head area<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Use the following phrases to talk about aches and pains affecting the head area.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019ve a sore throat.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ve got a horrible cold.<\/li>\n<li>I always get a cold during the winter season.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m allergic to dust.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m getting toothache. OR I\u2019m getting a toothache.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ve got a headache.<\/li>\n<li>I always get a sore throat if I eat or drink something cold.<\/li>\n<li>My eyes are itchy.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t pick your nose. It\u2019s a very bad habit.<\/li>\n<li>I get a runny nose during the winter season.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ve a cold sore on my lips.<\/li>\n<li>How did you get that cut on your chin?<\/li>\n<li>I used to get a lot of pimples when I was young.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m thinking of getting my nose pierced.<\/li>\n<li>I had pimple problems when I was a teenager.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Note the use of articles with the names of illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>The is used before the names of some common illnesses. Examples are: <strong>the measles, the flu.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Names of major illnesses are usually used with no articles. Examples are: cancer, diabetes, jaundice etc. We do not usually say <em>the cancer or the diabetes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The article<strong> a\/an<\/strong> is used with the names of common aches and pains. Examples are: <em>a toothache, a cold, a headache, an earache, a backache etc.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The body area<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here is a range of phrases you can use to talk about general pains and aches that affect the body area.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t turn your head too quickly. You might hurt your neck.<\/li>\n<li>I hurt my neck when I turned my head too quickly.<\/li>\n<li>I think I should consult a doctor. I\u2019ve been getting chest pain recently.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m asthmatic.<\/li>\n<li>His asthma gets worse during winter months.<\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t like spicy food. If I eat it, I get a stomach ache.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ve got a pot belly. I don\u2019t know how to get rid of the fat on my stomach.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ve an upset stomach.<\/li>\n<li>My stomach hurts.<\/li>\n<li>Are you hungry? I can hear your stomach rumble.<\/li>\n<li>If you want six pack abs, you\u2019ll have to hit the gym every day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Six pack<\/strong> is a terminology used to describe a flat stomach. Abs is short for abdomen. The phrase washboard abs is also used to refer to a flat stomach.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She\u2019s got washboard abs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Use the following phrases to talk about body pain.
