Here are some of them.<\/p>\n<h2>Use the imperative form<\/h2>\n<p>We use the imperative form to give orders, warnings and advice:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Be quiet!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Take care!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Come here!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Put it there!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Listen!<\/p>\n<p>Soften the imperative form with <strong>let\u2019s or please<\/strong> while talking to an adult.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Let&#8217;s go now, shall we?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Please listen to what I&#8217;m saying. (More polite than \u2018Listen to what I am saying.\u2019)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Come with me, please.<\/p>\n<h2>Use a modal auxiliary verb to turn an\u00a0order into a request<\/h2>\n<p>Modal auxiliary verbs can make orders and instructions sound more polite. For example, \u2018Could you help me?\u2019 is more polite than \u2018Help me!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>More examples are given below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Could you make me some tea?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Could you bring me that file, please?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Can you do something for me?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Could you lend me 50 dollars, please?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Could you pick up the kids from school, please?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Can you come here please?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Can you wait a minute?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Will you keep quiet please?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Can you do this for me?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Would you wait here until I\u2019m back?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Could<\/strong> is more polite than <strong>can.<\/strong> Both can and could are followed by an infinitive without to.<\/p>\n<h2>Use an introductory phrase to soften the order<\/h2>\n<p>Instead of using an imperative, you can use an introductory phrase. Here are some common ways of rephrasing an order.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Would you mind\u2026?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the most polite form. Note that would you mind\u2026? is followed by a noun or an \u2013ing form.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Would you mind waiting for an hour?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Would you mind moving a bit? (= Please move a bit.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Would you mind helping me with the housework? (= Please help me with the housework.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Would you mind opening the window? (= Please open the window.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>I was hoping\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I was hoping you could lend me some money.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I was hoping you could spare me a few minutes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I was hoping you could help me with the homework.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you think you could \u2026 (+ infinitive without to)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Do you think you could type these letters for me?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Do you think you could tidy up the room?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Do you think you could help me with the housework?<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;d like you to\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This phrase is used to make a more direct request. It is more like an order than a request.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I\u2019d like you to help me with the housework.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I\u2019d like you to type these letters for me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I want you to\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the least polite of all these forms.
