{"id":2214,"date":"2017-06-04T10:07:50","date_gmt":"2017-06-04T10:07:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/?p=2214"},"modified":"2017-06-04T10:07:50","modified_gmt":"2017-06-04T10:07:50","slug":"reporting-questions-grammar-for-classes-9-and-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/reporting-questions-grammar-for-classes-9-and-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Reporting Questions | Grammar For Classes 9 and 10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Read the following questions asked by a traveler.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do I have to pay for this call?<\/li>\n<li>Will I have to get a visa for Nepal?<\/li>\n<li>Will I be able to find Bengali speaking people in China?<\/li>\n<li>How long will I have to wait for a visa?<\/li>\n<li>When will I receive my visa?<\/li>\n<li>How much will the tickets cost?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you were to report these questions, you would say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The traveller<strong> asked me if she had<\/strong> to pay for that call.<\/li>\n<li>The traveller<strong> asked if she would have<\/strong> to get a visa for Nepal. \/ The traveller <strong>wanted to know if she would have to<\/strong> get a visa for Nepal.<\/li>\n<li>The traveller <strong>wanted to know if she would be able to<\/strong> find Bengali speaking people in China.<\/li>\n<li>The traveller <strong>asked \/ enquired how long she would have<\/strong> to wait for a visa.<\/li>\n<li>The traveller <strong>wanted to know when she would<\/strong> receive her visa.<\/li>\n<li>The traveller <strong>wanted to know how much the tickets would cost<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When we report questions we follow the basic rules of reported speech.<\/p>\n<p>In reported questions we use a full stop instead of a question mark.<\/p>\n<p>We use reporting verbs like <strong>asked, enquired, wanted to know, wished to know etc.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In reported questions the subject goes before the verb and the word order is the same as in statements.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He wanted to know <strong>if he could<\/strong> park there. (NOT He wanted to know if could be park there?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Reporting WH-questions<\/h3>\n<p>When we report WH-questions, the WH-word goes immediately after the reporting verb.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The student: When will the classes be held? (Direct speech)<\/li>\n<li>The student<strong> asked when<\/strong> the classes would be held. (Reported speech)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Reporting Yes\/No questions<\/h3>\n<p>We use <strong>if or whether<\/strong> to report Yes\/No questions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The traveller: Will you be able to help me? (Direct speech)<\/li>\n<li>The traveller <strong>asked if I would be able to<\/strong> help him.
