Examples are: <strong>can\u2019t I? wasn\u2019t it? don\u2019t you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Notes<\/h3>\n<p>When the statement is affirmative, we use a negative tag. When the statement is negative, we use an affirmative tag.<\/p>\n<p>If the subject of the sentence is a noun, we change that into a pronoun in the question tag.<\/p>\n<p>The students have submitted their assignments, haven\u2019t they? (In the question tag we use the pronoun \u2018they\u2019 to refer to the plural noun \u2018students\u2019.)<\/p>\n<p>When a tag is spoken, the voice can go up or down.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Now I can hold my head up with dignity, can\u2019t I?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here the falling intonation indicates that this is not really a question.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You conduct music classes, don\u2019t you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here the rising intonation suggests that the speaker is not very sure. This tag is more like a genuine question.<br \/>\nIn the case of a request beginning with Let\u2019s\u2026 the tag used is shall we?<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectyourenglish.com\/glossary\/imperatives.htm\">imperatives<\/a>, we can use <strong>will you? won\u2019t you? would you? can\u2019t you? can you? or could you?<\/strong> in question tags.<\/p>\n<h2>Question Tags Exercise<\/h2>\n<p>Add appropriate question tags to the following sentences.<\/p>\n<p>1.
