Use <strong>\u2018the\u2019<\/strong> in all subsequent references to that person \/ thing.<\/p>\n<p>Use \u2018a\/an\u2019 to mean one. Use \u2018the\u2019 with other meanings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is <strong>a man<\/strong> at the gate. (= There is one man at the gate.) (NOT There is the man at the gate.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>The man<\/strong> is demanding admission. (We use \u2018the\u2019 here because the listener already knows which man we are talking about \u2013 the one at the gate.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use \u2018the\u2019 with the names of objects belonging to our physical environment. Examples are: <em>the sun, the moon, the star, the beach, the hill, the cloud<\/em> etc.<\/p>\n<h2>Articles Exercise<\/h2>\n<p>The following sentences do not contain any articles. Rewrite them adding articles wherever necessary.<\/p>\n<p>1. My father took me to beach yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>2. I watched interesting film yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>3. My sister wants to be scientist.<\/p>\n<p>4. I want to buy smart phone.<\/p>\n<p>5. Teacher scolded boys for talking in class.<\/p>\n<p>6. I am writing letter.<\/p>\n<p>7. He has written novel whose name I don\u2019t remember.<\/p>\n<p>8. They have bought apartment in city.<\/p>\n<p>9. I have received good job offer from multinational company.<\/p>\n<p>10. There is spider on roof.<\/p>\n<p>11. Get cat off piano.<\/p>\n<p>12. One of my cousins is doctor.<\/p>\n<p>13. I have niece and nephew.<\/p>\n<p>14. We are planning to launch business.<\/p>\n<p>15. She has acted in movie.<\/p>\n<p>16. Girl who just walked in is my neighbour\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n<p>17. I am looking forward to becoming grandmother.<\/p>\n<h2>Answers<\/h2>\n<p>1. My father took me to <strong>the beach<\/strong> yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>2. I watched <strong>an interesting film<\/strong> yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>3.
