Most of them refer to states rather than actions.<br \/>\nSome of them refer to thoughts and emotions (think, believe, know). Some others refer to the use of the senses (smell, taste)<\/p>\n<h2>Common non-continuous verbs<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Verbs referring to mental and emotional states<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Believe, doubt, feel, imagine, know, dislike, love, hate, like, prefer, realise, recognise, remember, see, suppose, think, understand, want and wish<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some of these verbs actually have continuous uses, but they are not used in the continuous form with certain meanings.<\/p>\n<p>Examples<\/p>\n<p>When \u2018see\u2019 means \u2018understand\u2019, it does not have a continuous form.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I <strong>see<\/strong> what you mean. (NOT I am seeing what you mean.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When think and feel mean \u2018have an opinion\u2019, they are not used in the continuous form.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I <strong>think<\/strong> you are making a mistake. (NOT I am thinking you are making a mistake.)<\/li>\n<li>I<strong> feel<\/strong> we should quit now. (NOT I am feeling we should quit now.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Verbs referring to the use of the senses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Appear, hear, look, see, seem, smell, sound, taste<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The verb \u2018look\u2019 does have a continuous form; however it is not used in its continuous form when it means seem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Verbs referring to emotions and reactions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Agree, astonish, deny, disagree, impress, mean, please, promise, satisfy, surprise<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Other verbs that are not normally used in the continuous form<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Belong, concern, consist, contain, depend, deserve, fit, include, involve, lack, matter, measure, need, owe, own, possess, weigh<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Exercise<\/h3>\n<p>Complete the following sentences using an appropriate verb form.<\/p>\n<p>1.
