In the sentence \u2018John helped me\u2019, John (subject) is the doer of the action. He does something &#8211; he helps. Here the verb helps says what the subject (John) does.<\/p>\n<p>A verb which expresses the action done by the subject is said to be in the <strong>active voice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the sentence &#8216;I was helped by John&#8217;, the subject I is the receiver of the action. Something is done to me &#8211; I am helped.<\/p>\n<p>A verb which expresses what is done to the subject is said to be in the<strong> passive voice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He loves me. (Passive voice)<br \/>\nThey took the child to hospital. (Active voice)<br \/>\nThe child was taken to hospital. (Passive voice)<\/p>\n<h2>Active and passive voice exercise<\/h2>\n<p>Sentences are given in the active voice. Change them into the passive voice.<\/p>\n<p>1. The starving man stole a piece of bread.<br \/>\n2. She taught me a lesson.<br \/>\n3. They praised the boy.<br \/>\n4. She has won the first prize.<br \/>\n5. I was reading a novel.<\/p>\n<p>Answers<\/p>\n<p>1. A piece of bread <strong>was stolen<\/strong> by the starving man.<br \/>\n2. I <strong>was taught<\/strong> a lesson (by her).<br \/>\n3. The boy <strong>was praised<\/strong> by them.<br \/>\n4. The first prize<strong> has been won<\/strong> by her.<br \/>\n5. A novel <strong>was being read<\/strong> by me.<\/p>\n<h2>Changing the Active verb into the Passive<\/h2>\n<p>When a sentence in the active voice is converted to the passive voice, the following changes occur:<\/p>\n<p>1. The object of the active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb.<\/p>\n<p>Alice invited John. (Active voice: subject \u2013 Alice; active verb \u2013 helped; object &#8211; John)<br \/>\nJohn was invited by Alice. (Passive Voice: subject \u2013 John; passive verb \u2013 was invited; object &#8211; Alice)<\/p>\n<p>2. The verb changes its form according to the number and person of the subject.<\/p>\n<p>I have written a novel. (Subject \u2013 I; verb \u2013 have written)<br \/>\nA novel has been written by me. (Subject \u2013 a novel; verb \u2013 has been written)<\/p>\n<p>3. The subject of the verb in the active voice becomes the object of the verb in the passive voice. This object is usually introduced with a preposition like by.<\/p>\n<p>They built this house in 1990.<br \/>\nThis house was built by them in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>4. The active verb changes its form to become the passive verb.<\/p>\n<p>I am writing a letter. (Active verb \u2013 am writing)<br \/>\nA letter is being written by me. (Passive verb \u2013 is being written)<\/p>\n<p>When the active verb has two objects<\/p>\n<p>If the active verb has two objects, either of them can become the subject of the passive verb.<\/p>\n<p>Arun will give you a present. (Active Voice)<br \/>\nYou will be given a present by Arun. (Passive voice &#8211; indirect object becomes subject.)<br \/>\nA present will be given to you by Arun.
