That means it can be used to modify a noun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An&nbsp;<strong>adjective clause<\/strong>&nbsp;is sometimes also called a&nbsp;<strong>relative clause<\/strong>. It is an example of a subordinate clause. Adjective clauses are usually introduced by the relative pronouns&nbsp;<strong>who, whom, which, that<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>whose<\/strong>. The relative adverbs&nbsp;<strong>when, where<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>why<\/strong>&nbsp;can also be used to introduce adjective clauses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can convert a simple sentence into a complex sentence by expanding an adjective or other determiner into a clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that an adjective clause comes immediately after the noun it modifies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Study the following examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I have bought his house.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a simple sentence. It can be converted into a complex sentence by expanding the possessive adjective&nbsp;<em>his<\/em>&nbsp;into an adjective clause. Study the sentence given below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I have bought the house&nbsp;<strong>which belonged to him.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>His house = the house which belonged to him<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Everybody loves honest boys. (Simple)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To convert this sentence into complex, expand the phrase&nbsp;<em>honest boys<\/em>&nbsp;into the clause \u2018boys who are honest\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Everybody loves boys&nbsp;<strong>who are honest<\/strong>.<\/li><li>This is Jack\u2019s house. (Simple sentence)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Jack\u2019s house = house that Jack built\/ house that belongs to Jack<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This is the house&nbsp;<strong>that Jack built<\/strong>. (Complex sentence)<\/li><li>He told me an interesting story. (Simple)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>An interesting story = a story that is interesting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>He told me a story&nbsp;<strong>that was interesting<\/strong>. (Complex)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong>The relative pronouns&nbsp;<strong>who, whom&nbsp;<\/strong>and&nbsp;<strong>whose<\/strong>&nbsp;are only used to talk about people. Note that&nbsp;<strong>whom&nbsp;<\/strong>is the object form of&nbsp;<strong>who<\/strong>. It can replace the pronouns him, her, them etc.&nbsp;<strong>Whom<\/strong>&nbsp;is rarely used in modern English. In a less formal style, we prefer&nbsp;<strong>who<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>She married a rich guy. I don\u2019t like him.<\/li><li>She married a rich guy&nbsp;<strong>whom&nbsp;<\/strong>I don\u2019t like. (Formal)<\/li><li>She married a rich guy&nbsp;<strong>who<\/strong>&nbsp;I don\u2019t like. (Informal)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Whose<\/strong>&nbsp;is the possessive form of&nbsp;<strong>who<\/strong>. It can replace the pronouns his, her, their etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I saw a girl. Her beauty took my breath away.<\/li><li>I saw a girl&nbsp;<strong>whose<\/strong>&nbsp;beauty took my breath away.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which<\/strong>&nbsp;is only used to talk about animals and things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That<\/strong>&nbsp;can be used to talk about both people and things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adjective clause worksheet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Underline the adjective clause in the following sentences.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. The elephant which is the largest land animal may soon join the list of endangered species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. She wore the necklace which was given by her grandmother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. I talked to the man who was in charge of the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. I need a laptop that has a huge memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. We must not trust people who do not stick to their words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. Everybody praised the boy whose bravery saved the life of his kid brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7.
