Conjunctions not only join clauses together; they also show how the meanings of the two clauses are related.<\/p>\n<p>Examples are:<strong> and, but, although, because, when, if<\/strong> etc.<\/p>\n<p>He is poor, but honest. (contrast)<br \/>\nI wrote the letters and Ann posted them. (addition)<br \/>\nHe was happy because he got a rise. (cause)<\/p>\n<p>Conjunctions are also used to join two or more words together.<\/p>\n<p>Two and two make four.<br \/>\nAnn and Mary are good friends.<br \/>\nJack and Jill went up the hill.<\/p>\n<p>There are two kinds of conjunctions: <strong>coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Coordinating conjunctions<\/strong> join pairs of clauses that are grammatically independent of each other. Examples are: <strong>and, or, but or yet.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other conjunctions, like b<strong>ecause, when, that or which<\/strong>, are called subordinating conjunctions. A subordinating conjunction together with its following clause acts like a part of the other clause.<\/p>\n<p>I will phone you when I arrive.<\/p>\n<p>Some conjunctions are made up of two or more words.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed an extra night<strong> so that<\/strong> I could see Alice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Correlative<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A general term for a pair of items which work together to connect things in a sentence but are not adjacent.<\/p>\n<p>Common examples of correlative conjunctions are: <strong><em>both \u2026 and, either \u2026 or, neither \u2026 nor, not only \u2026 but also, as \u2026 as, rather \u2026 than and so \u2026 that.<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I would rather be good than lucky.<\/li>\n<li>Peter both smokes and drinks.<\/li>\n<li>This book is so interesting that I can\u2019t put it down.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Conjunctions are words that join clauses into sentences.
