Some English verbs are always intransitive and can never take an object.<\/p>\n<p>Examples are: sleep, come, go, die, fall, laugh, arrive etc.<\/p>\n<p>The child sleeps.<br \/>\nHe might come.<br \/>\nHe laughed loudly.<br \/>\nAlice arrived early.<\/p>\n<p>Many verbs can be either transitive or intransitive.<\/p>\n<p>Examples are: <em>sink, ring, stop, speak etc.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The explosion sank the ship. (transitive)<br \/>\nThe ship sank slowly. (intransitive)<br \/>\nThe driver stopped the train. (transitive)<br \/>\nThe train stopped suddenly. (intransitive)<br \/>\nHe spoke the truth. (transitive)<br \/>\nHe spoke rudely. (intransitive)<\/p>\n<h3>Labile verb<\/h3>\n<p>A verb which can be either transitive or intransitive with related meanings. English has many labile verbs.<\/p>\n<p>Examples are: ring, sink, smoke, undress, fight etc.<\/p>\n<p>Ring the bell. (transitive)<br \/>\nThe bell rang. (intransitive)<br \/>\nThe explosion sank the ship. (transitive)<br \/>\nThe ship sank rapidly. (intransitive)<br \/>\nThe soldiers fought the enemies. (transitive)<br \/>\nThey fought bravely.
