English has two participles: <strong>the present participle and the past participle.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Forms like<strong> running, singing, walking and working<\/strong> are called present participles. Forms like <strong>worked, broken, gone, written and walked<\/strong> are called past participles.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Uses of participles<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>To form verb forms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Participles are used with the auxiliary verbs be and have to make progressive, perfect and passive verb forms.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She was crying. (present progressive)<\/li>\n<li>I have written a novel. (present perfect)<\/li>\n<li>We have been waiting for ages. (present perfect progressive)<\/li>\n<li>They were having dinner when we called. (past progressive)<\/li>\n<li>He had left before I called. (past perfect)<\/li>\n<li>They were forced to give up their claim. (passive)<\/li>\n<li>It was broken in the storm. (passive)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Participles As adjectives<\/h3>\n<p>Participles can be used as adjectives before nouns, or after be and other copular verbs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Barking dogs seldom bite.<\/li>\n<li>A burnt child dreads fire.<\/li>\n<li>He looked tired.<\/li>\n<li>The village appeared deserted.<\/li>\n<li>The children were excited.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not all participles can be used as adjectives before nouns \u2013 for example, we can say<em> a lost dog, but not a found dog<\/em>. It is not possible to give clear rules.<\/p>\n<h3>Participles As adverbs<\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes participles are used like adverbs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She came running into the room.<\/li>\n<li>He ran screaming out of the room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>To form clauses<\/h3>\n<p>Participles can combine with other words into clause-like structures.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Driven by rain, they took shelter under a tree.<\/li>\n<li>Stricken with grief, she threw herself on the body.<\/li>\n<li>The thief admitted having stolen the money.<\/li>\n<li>Deceived by his friends, he lost all hope.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A participle is a word which is partly a verb and partly an adjective.
