A participle<\/strong> is a word which is partly a verb and partly an adjective. English has two participles: the present participle and the past participle.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Forms like running, singing, walking and working<\/strong> are called present participles. Forms like worked, broken, gone, written and walked<\/strong> are called past participles.<\/p>\n

Uses of participles<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To form verb forms<\/strong><\/p>\n

Participles are used with the auxiliary verbs be and have to make progressive, perfect and passive verb forms.<\/p>\n

  • She was crying. (present progressive)<\/li>\n
  • I have written a novel. (present perfect)<\/li>\n
  • We have been waiting for ages. (present perfect progressive)<\/li>\n
  • They were having dinner when we called. (past progressive)<\/li>\n
  • He had left before I called. (past perfect)<\/li>\n
  • They were forced to give up their claim. (passive)<\/li>\n
  • It was broken in the storm. (passive)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Participles As adjectives<\/h3>\n

    Participles can be used as adjectives before nouns, or after be and other copular verbs.<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Barking dogs seldom bite.<\/li>\n
    • A burnt child dreads fire.<\/li>\n
    • He looked tired.<\/li>\n
    • The village appeared deserted.<\/li>\n
    • The children were excited.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Not all participles can be used as adjectives before nouns \u2013 for example, we can say a lost dog, but not a found dog<\/em>. It is not possible to give clear rules.<\/p>\n

      Participles As adverbs<\/h3>\n

      Sometimes participles are used like adverbs.<\/p>\n

      • She came running into the room.<\/li>\n
      • He ran screaming out of the room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        To form clauses<\/h3>\n

        Participles can combine with other words into clause-like structures.<\/p>\n

        • Driven by rain, they took shelter under a tree.<\/li>\n
        • Stricken with grief, she threw herself on the body.<\/li>\n
        • The thief admitted having stolen the money.<\/li>\n
