At the same time, different prepositions can have very similar uses.<\/p>\n<p>When we use verbs after prepositions, we use -ing forms, not infinitives.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We are thinking <strong>of visiting<\/strong> them. (NOT We are thinking of to visit them.)<\/li>\n<li>He insisted <strong>on being<\/strong> paid at once. (NOT He insisted on to be paid at once.)<\/li>\n<li>I hate the idea <strong>of getting<\/strong> old.<\/li>\n<li>I am not very good <strong>at cooking.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When <strong>to<\/strong> is a preposition, it is followed by an <strong>-ing form.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I look forward<strong> to seeing<\/strong> you soon.<\/li>\n<li>She objected <strong>to my entering<\/strong> her room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to single-word prepositions like <strong>at, in, on, for, to and about<\/strong>, there are certain word groups which function as prepositions.<\/p>\n<p>Examples include<em><strong> in front of, in spite of, by means of, in order to, on behalf of and in the course of .<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>These word groups are called phrase prepositions or conglomerate prepositions.<\/p>\n<h3>Prepositional phrase<\/h3>\n<p>A phrase consisting of a preposition followed by a noun phrase, its object. In the following example, all the bracketed sequences are prepositional phrases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(After the game<\/strong>) several <strong>(of the players)<\/strong> went <strong>(into the town)<\/strong> <strong>(with their wives).<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A preposition is a word like on, in, off, about and over.
