Two common types of questions exist: <strong><em>Yes-No questions and WH-questions.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you coming with us?<\/li>\n<li>Who is she talking to?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other types of questions also exist.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the question <em>Is it a bird or a plane?<\/em> is a polar question.<\/p>\n<p>The examples given above are all direct questions.<\/p>\n<p>English also allows utterances which have the force of questions, even though they have the form of statements.<\/p>\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You are coming with us? (uttered with rising intonation)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Tag question<\/h3>\n<p>An expression like <strong><em>isn\u2019t it? or don\u2019t you?<\/em><\/strong> (consisting of auxiliary verb + pronoun subject) put on to the end of a sentence.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a nice day, <strong><em>isn\u2019t it?<\/em> <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>She doesn\u2019t care, <strong><em>does she?<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Question tags are used to check whether something is true, or to ask for agreement. We use a negative question tag after an affirmative sentence.<\/p>\n<p>You are the new secretary, <strong><em>aren\u2019t you?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We use a non-negative question tag after a negative sentence.<\/p>\n<p>You aren\u2019t the new secretary, <strong><em>are you?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A sentence expressed in a form which requires an answer.
