{"id":71819,"date":"2019-08-28T07:49:23","date_gmt":"2019-08-28T07:49:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/?p=71819"},"modified":"2019-08-28T07:49:23","modified_gmt":"2019-08-28T07:49:23","slug":"relative-clause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/relative-clause\/","title":{"rendered":"Relative Clause"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A relative clause is a clause introduced by a <strong>relative pronoun<\/strong> like <strong>who or which.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two common types of relative clauses exit: <strong><em>defining (or identifying) relative clause and non-defining (or non-identifying) relative clause.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An identifying relative clause identifies the noun it refers to \u2013 that is to say, it tells us which person or thing is being talked about.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the example given below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People <strong><em>who take physical exercise<\/em> <\/strong>live longer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here the relative clause is <em>who take physical exercise<\/em>. This relative clause is identifying, since it is required for identification: without it, we would have only<em> People live longer<\/em>, which does not identify the people under discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Other examples are given below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The restaurant <strong><em>which we visited last night<\/em><\/strong> was pretty good.<\/li>\n<li>Paris is a city <strong><em>I have always wanted to visit.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>She married a man <strong><em>that she met on a bus.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Identifying relative clauses<\/strong> usually follow immediately after the nouns that they modify, without a break: they are not separated by commas in writing. This is because the noun would be incomplete without the relative clause, and the sentence would make no sense or have a different meaning.<\/p>\n<p>A non-defining relative clause is not required for identification. It serves only to provide additional information. Non-identifying clauses are normally separated by commas.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Janet, <strong><em>who does my hair,<\/em><\/strong> has moved to another hairdresser\u2019s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here the relative clause is <strong><em>who does my hair<\/em><\/strong>. This relative clause is non-identifying, since it is not required to identify Janet: it merely provides additional information.<\/p>\n<p>Another example is given below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She married a smart architect from Beijing, <strong><em>whom she met on a bus.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\nRelative adverb<\/h3>\n<p>An adverb which introduces a relative clause. The English relative adverbs are where, when, wherever and whenever.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The day <strong><em>when I met John<\/em><\/strong> was the best day of my life.<\/li>\n<li>Alice takes her cell phone <strong><em>wherever she goes.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A relative clause is a clause introduced by a relative pronoun like who or which.
