For example, we say<em> a golden opportunity<\/em>, but not a golden chance. Similarly, we say <em>&#8216;thanks a lot&#8217;<\/em>, but not &#8216;thank you a lot&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>More examples are given below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A burning desire (BUT NOT a blazing row)<\/li>\n<li>A blazing row (BUT NOT a burning row)<\/li>\n<li>A heavy smoker (BUT NOT an indulgent smoker)<\/li>\n<li>Change one&#8217;s mind (BUT NOT Change one&#8217;s thoughts)<\/li>\n<li>Slightly annoyed (BUT NOT slightly interesting)<\/li>\n<li>A devoted friend<\/li>\n<li>An indulgent mother<\/li>\n<li>A crashing bore<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Collocations<\/strong> are idiomatic in a way. It is easy to understand the meaning of collocations, but a foreign learner may find it difficult to produce them correctly.<\/p>\n<p>A learner who uses wrong word combinations for an idea may still be understood, but he or she will not sound natural.<\/p>\n<p>All languages have large numbers of collocations.
