Fewer refers to a number that can be counted.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I am eating less butter.<\/li>\n<li>We caught fewer fish.<\/li>\n<li>There were fewer children in the class than expected.<\/li>\n<li>We did less work today than yesterday.<\/li>\n<li>The use of seat belts in cars has led to fewer fatalities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Lie and lay<\/h3>\n<p>The verbs lie and lay are often confused.<\/p>\n<p>To lie means to rest. Examples are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I lie on the bed. (simple present)<\/li>\n<li>I am lying on the bed. (present progressive)<\/li>\n<li>I was lying on the bed. (past progressive)<\/li>\n<li>I lay on the bed. (simple past)<\/li>\n<li>I have lain on the bed. (present perfect)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To lie also means to not tell the truth. Examples are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I lie. (simple present)<\/li>\n<li>I am lying. (present progressive)<\/li>\n<li>I was lying. (past progressive)<\/li>\n<li>I lied. (simple past)<\/li>\n<li>I have lied. (present perfect)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To lay means to put something down. Examples are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I lay the book on the table. (simple present)<\/li>\n<li>I am laying the book on the table. (present progressive)<\/li>\n<li>I laid the book on the table. (past progressive)<\/li>\n<li>I was laying the book on the table. (simple past)<\/li>\n<li>I have laid the book on the table. (present perfect)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More examples are given below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alice says she has already laid the table.<\/li>\n<li>The book was laid on the chest of drawers.<\/li>\n<li>While lying in bed, I had an idea.<\/li>\n<li>I would like to lie in the sun this morning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Kind and kinds<\/h3>\n<p>The word kind is singular. It should be used with this or that to modify a singular noun. The word kinds is plural. It should be used with these or those to modify plural nouns.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I like these kinds of apples. (NOT \u2026 these kind of apples.)<\/li>\n<li>That kind of coffee is not sold here. (NOT \u2026 that kind of coffees)<\/li>\n<li>Those are the kinds of days I like. (NOT Those are the kind of days \u2026)<\/li>\n<li>This class of animal is rare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that the same rule applies to other words \u2013 sort, type and class.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you prefer this sort of meat pie? (NOT \u2026 this sort of meat pies?)<\/li>\n<li>These types of cars are very fast.
