(= She screamed and ran out of the room.)<\/li>\n<li>She gave a cough to attract my attention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This structure can also be used with an indirect object. Common expressions are:<\/p>\n<p>Give something a push<br \/>\nGive something a kick<br \/>\nGive something a clean<br \/>\nGive something a try<br \/>\nGive something a miss<br \/>\nGive somebody a ring<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I will give you a ring before I arrive.<\/li>\n<li>Give it a push if it doesn\u2019t start.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Are you coming to the film?\u2019 \u2018No, I am busy. I will give it a miss.\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We say <em>take an exam,<\/em> not <em>give an exam<\/em>.
