It is more formal than talk.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They are no longer on good terms. In fact, they have stopped<strong> speaking<\/strong> to one another. (More formal than &#8216;They have stopped talking to one another.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We often use <strong>talk<\/strong> to refer to the act of giving an informal lecture. Speak is used for more formal lectures or sermons.<\/p>\n<p>Compare:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is Ms Annie Sullivan, who is going to<strong> talk<\/strong> to us about the need to develop good table manners. (Informal or less serious lecture)<\/li>\n<li>This is Doctor Annie Sullivan, who is going to<strong> speak<\/strong> to us on recent developments in molecular biology. (Formal lecture)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that <strong>speak<\/strong> is the usual word to refer to a person&#8217;s physical ability to speak a language.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She <strong>speaks<\/strong> five languages fluently. (NOT She talks five languages fluently.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that we usually use<strong> talk before sense, nonsense<\/strong> and other words with similar meanings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t <strong>talk nonsense<\/strong>.
