There is usually a difference of meaning or use. Some examples are given below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dead and Deadly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In certain expressions, the adverb dead is used to mean exactly, completely or very.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples are: <em>dead certain, dead slow, dead right, dead drunk etc.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Deadly<\/strong> is an adjective. It means fatal, causing death. The adverb for this meaning is fatally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cyanide is a deadly poison.<\/li><li>She was fatally injured.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fine and Finely<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The adverb fine means well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u2018How are you?\u2019 \u2018I am fine.\u2019<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The adverb <strong>finely<\/strong> is used to talk about small careful adjustments and similar ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a finely tuned machine<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Free and Freely<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When used after a verb, the adverb free means without payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Buy two shirts and get one free.<\/li><li>Can I eat free in your restaurant?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Freely<\/strong> means without limit or restriction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Speak freely.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hard and Hardly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The adverb hard means heavily, severely or with difficulty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You must work hard.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hardly<\/strong> means <strong>almost not.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I have hardly any money left.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Late and Lately<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The adverb <strong>late<\/strong> has a similar meaning to the adjective late. Lately means a short time ago and recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We will be late for dinner.<\/li><li>It is getting late.<\/li><li>I have not read anything lately.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Most and Mostly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most is the superlative of much. It is used to form superlative adjectives and adverbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Those who have the most money are not always the happiest.<\/li><li>What pleased me most was his helping nature.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In a formal style, most can mean very.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is <strong>a most (=very) interesting<\/strong> book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mostly<\/strong> means chiefly, generally or in most cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>My friends are mostly non-smokers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Real and Really<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In informal American English, real is often used before adjectives and adverbs. It means the same as really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>That was real nice. (=really nice)<\/li><li>She sings real well. (=really well)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sure and Surely<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In an informal style, sure is often used to mean certainly.
