It suggests an indefinite quantity or number. It is used when it is not important to say how much\/many we are thinking of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Is there any water in the bottle?<\/li><li>Have you got any friends?<\/li><li>Have they got any children?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Any<\/strong> is often used in questions and negative clauses, and in other cases where there is an idea of doubt or negation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Are there any witnesses?<\/li><li>Do you need any help?<\/li><li>I haven\u2019t got any money.<\/li><li>I have hardly any food in the larder.<\/li><li>You never give me any help.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Any<\/strong> is also common after <strong>if.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you need any help, let me know.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Any, no, not any<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that any alone does not have a negative meaning. It is negative only when it is used with <strong>not.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>See that you don\u2019t do any damage. (NOT See that you do any damage.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No<\/strong> means the same as <strong>not any<\/strong>, but is more emphatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>He has got <strong>no<\/strong> friends. (More emphatic than He hasn\u2019t got any friends.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Any and Any of<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before a pronoun or a noun with a determiner (the, this, my, your etc.) we use <strong>any of.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do any of these books belong to you?<\/li><li>I don\u2019t think any of us want to work tomorrow.<\/li><li>She doesn\u2019t like any of my friends.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that when any of is followed by a plural subject, the verb can be singular or plural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If <strong>any of<\/strong> your friends is interested, let us know. (formal)<\/li><li>If <strong>any of<\/strong> your friends are interested, let us know. (informal)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Any with singular countable nouns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Any is the plural equivalent of <strong>a\/an<\/strong>.
