As <\/b>can be used to refer to the reason for something. This is particularly common when the reason is already known to the listener\/reader, or when it is not the most important part of the sentence.     As-clauses<\/b> often come at the beginning of sentences. They are relatively formal. In an informal style, the same ideas are often expressed with so.<\/b><\/p>\n

    • She wanted to pass, so <\/b>she decided to study well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      As and since<\/h3>\n

      As <\/b>and since<\/b> can both be used to refer to the reason for something. They are used in the same way.<\/p>\n

      • As<\/b> he wasn\u2019t ready, we went without him.<\/li>\n
      • Since <\/b>she wanted to pass her exam, she decided to study well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Since-<\/b> and as-clauses<\/b> cannot stand alone.<\/p>\n

        Because<\/h3>\n

        Because <\/b>often introduces new information which is not known to the listener\/reader. It puts more emphasis on the reason. When the reason is the most important part of the sentence, the because-clause<\/b> usually comes at the end.<\/p>\n

        • We had dinner after ten o\u2019 clock because <\/b>dad arrived late.<\/li>\n
        • He bought a new home because <\/b>he won a lottery.<\/li>\n
        • I read because <\/b>I like reading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          A because-clause can stand alone.<\/p>\n

            For<\/h3>\n

            We use a for-clause <\/b>when we introduce new information. A for-clause often expresses an inference. It cannot come at the beginning. It cannot stand alone either.<\/p>\n

            • Something certainly fell ill; for <\/b>I heard a splash.<\/li>\n
