In<\/b> is used for position inside large places – countries, districts, large cities etc, and in three-dimensional space (when something is surrounded on all sides.). At <\/b>is generally used for small and unimportant places like villages, small towns etc.<\/p>\n

  • He lives at <\/b>Ottappalam in Kerala<\/b>. (Ottappalam is a village in Kerala.)<\/li>\n
  • His brother lives at Mumbai<\/b>. (Mumbai is a big city.)<\/li>\n
  • Turn right at <\/b>the next corner.<\/li>\n
  • She grew up in Africa<\/b>.<\/li>\n
  • Let’s go for a walk in the woods<\/b>.<\/li>\n
  • He is in the office<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    This rule is not very rigidly followed, and in <\/b>is often used for small places too, though at<\/b> is seldom used for big places.<\/p>\n

    Sometimes we use at<\/b> with a larger place, if we just think of this as a point on a journey or a meeting place, for example.<\/p>\n

    • Let’s meet at the club<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      At <\/b>is particularly common with proper names used for buildings or organizations.<\/p>\n
