In this case a past perfect tense is used.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She realized that she had seen him <b>before.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We also use <b>before <\/b>after a time expression to <i>count back from a past moment<\/i>. A past perfect tense is normally used. Note that to count back from the present, we use <b>ago,<\/b> not <b>before.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3>Before as a conjunction<\/h3>\n<p>The conjunction <b>before <\/b>is used to join one clause to another. <b>Before<\/b> and its clause can come either before or after the other clause.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I will die before I surrender.<\/li>\n<li>Before I surrender, I will die. (Note the comma in the second structure.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Tenses in before clauses<\/h3>\n<p>In a clause with <b>before,<\/b> we use a present tense to refer to the future.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I will telephone you <b>before I come.<\/b> (NOT &#8212; before I will come.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To emphasise the idea of completion, we often use present and past perfect tenses in <b>before-clauses.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can\u2019t go to bed <b>before you have finished <\/b>your homework.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a formal style, we often use the structure <b>before -ing.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Please put out all lights <b>before leaving<\/b> the office.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Before as a preposition<\/h3>\n<p>The preposition <b>before<\/b> is normally used to refer to time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I must get home <b>before nine o\u2019clock. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that <b>before <\/b>can refer to place in a few cases:<\/p>\n<p><b>a)<\/b> to talk about the order in which people or things come in queues, lists etc.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your name comes <b>before<\/b> mine on the list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>b)<\/b> to mean <i>in the presence of<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He was brought <b>before<\/b> the judge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before as an adverb Before, as an adverb, means already, in the past and similar ideas.
