The prepositions below <\/b>and under <\/b>can both mean lower than. <\/b> But there are some differences.<\/p>\n

Below<\/h2>\n

Below <\/b>is preferred when one thing is not directly under another.<\/p>\n

  • When the sun sets, it sinks below <\/b>the horizon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Below <\/b>is used in measurements of temperature and height, and in other cases where we think of a vertical scale.<\/p>\n

    • The temperature is 10 degrees below <\/b>zero.<\/li>\n
    • The Dead Sea is below <\/b>sea level.<\/li>\n
    • She is below <\/b>average in intelligence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Under<\/h2>\n

      We prefer under <\/b>when something is covered or hidden by what is over it.<\/p>\n

      • I think the cat is under <\/b>the bed.<\/li>\n
      • The whole village was under <\/b>water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        We usually use under, <\/b>not below, to mean less than or younger than.<\/p>\n
