As a conjunction<\/h3>\n

But,<\/b> as a conjunction, is used to join contrasting ideas.<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Their front door was open, but nobody was at home.<\/li>\n
  • The rope was thin but it was strong.<\/li>\n
  • He is hardworking, but not clever.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As a preposition<\/h3>\n

    But,<\/b> as a preposition, can mean except <\/i><\/b> after all, none, every, any, no <\/b>etc.<\/p>\n

    • They are all<\/b> wrong but me!<\/b> (= — except me.)<\/li>\n
    • All but <\/b>you loved me for money. (= All except you loved me for money.)<\/li>\n
    • Everybody <\/b>came but <\/b>John. (= Everybody came except John.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The expression but for<\/i><\/b> is used to express the idea of if something had not existed\/happened<\/i>.<\/p>\n

      • We should have enjoyed the journey but for the rain.<\/b><\/li>\n
      • He would have helped us but for<\/b> having no money himself. (—except that he had no money.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        After but <\/b>we usually use object pronouns. Subject pronouns are also possible in a formal style.<\/p>\n

        • Nobody but him <\/b>would do a thing like that. (More formal: Nobody but he —)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Cannot but + infinitive<\/h3>\n

          Cannot but + infinitive<\/b> or cannot help but + infinitive<\/b> is often used with the meaning of can’t help -ing<\/i>.<\/p>\n

          • I cannot but admire <\/b>your courage (= I cannot help admiring <\/b>your courage.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            But meaning only<\/h3>\n

            But,<\/b> as an adverb, can mean only.<\/b> This is very unusual in modern English.<\/p>\n

            • We can but try.<\/b> (= We can only try.)<\/li>\n
