(= All except you loved me for money.)<\/li>\n<li><b>Everybody <\/b>came <b>but <\/b>John. (= Everybody came except John.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The expression<b> <i>but for<\/i><\/b> is used to express the idea of <i>if something had not existed\/happened<\/i>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We should have enjoyed the journey <b>but for the rain.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>He would have helped us <b>but for<\/b> having no money himself. (&#8212;except that he had no money.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After <b>but <\/b>we usually use object pronouns. Subject pronouns are also possible in a formal style.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nobody <b>but him <\/b>would do a thing like that. (More formal: Nobody but he &#8212;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Cannot but + infinitive<\/h3>\n<p><b>Cannot but + infinitive<\/b> or <b>cannot help but + infinitive<\/b> is often used with the meaning of <i>can&#8217;t help -ing<\/i>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I <b>cannot but admire <\/b>your courage (= I <b>cannot help admiring <\/b>your courage.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>But meaning only<\/h3>\n<p><b>But,<\/b> as an adverb, can mean <b>only.<\/b> This is very unusual in modern English.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We can <b>but try.<\/b> (= We can only try.)<\/li>\n<li>He is <b>but a boy.<\/b> (= He is only a boy.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a conjunction But, as a conjunction, is used to join contrasting ideas.
