They are used to join two clauses together. <b>In spite of<\/b> and <b>despite <\/b>are prepositions. They are followed by a noun or an -ing form.<\/p>\n<p>Read the following sentences.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Her performance was good. Still she did not win the first prize.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can combine these two sentences into one in the following ways.<\/p>\n<h5>Using though<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Though<\/b> her performance was good, she did not win the first prize. OR She did not win the first prize <b>though her performance was good<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that <b>though<\/b> and its clause can come either before or after the main clause.<\/p>\n<h5>Using but<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Her performance was good but she did not win the first prize.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We do not usually begin sentences with but.<\/p>\n<h5>Using in spite of and despite<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><b>In spite of her good performance<\/b>, she did not win the first prize.<\/li>\n<li><b>In spite of her performance being good<\/b>, she did not win the first prize.<\/li>\n<li><b>Despite her good performance<\/b>, she did not win the first prize.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Despite<\/b> is more formal than<b> in spite of<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Another example is given below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It was raining. Still we went out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can combine these two sentences in the following ways.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Though<\/b> it was raining, we went out.<\/li>\n<li>It was raining <b>but<\/b> we went out.<\/li>\n<li>We went out <b>in spite of<\/b> the rain.<\/li>\n<li>We went out <b>despite<\/b> the rain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>I had a headache.
