Close<\/b> and shut<\/b> can often be used with the same meaning.<\/p>\n

  • She closed\/shut <\/b>her eyes against the light.<\/li>\n
  • All the shops were closed\/shut, <\/b> so I couldn\u2019t buy anything.<\/li>\n
  • The shop closes\/shuts<\/b> at seven o\u2019clock.<\/li>\n
  • Could you close\/shut <\/b>the windows, please?<\/li>\n
  • Close\/shut <\/b>your eyes – I have a surprise for you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The past participles closed <\/b>and shut <\/b>can be used as adjectives.<\/p>\n

    • The shop is closed\/shut <\/b>on Sundays.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Note that the past participle shut<\/b> cannot be used before a noun. We can say a closed shop<\/b> or door<\/b>, but not <\/b>a shut shop or door.<\/p>\n

      Cases where close is preferred<\/h3>\n

      We prefer close <\/b>for slow movements.<\/p>\n

        Cloth vs. Clothes<\/h3>\n

        Cloth <\/b>is the material used for making clothes. Examples are wool, cotton, silk etc. Clothes <\/b>means garments – things you wear on your body.<\/p>\n

        • Her clothes <\/b>are all made of expensive cloth.<\/li>\n
        • Woolen clothes<\/b> are the best in summer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Clothes<\/b> has no singular. We say an article\/ a piece of clothing<\/b>, but not <\/b>a cloth.<\/p>\n
