Perhaps that person is known to both the speaker and the listener. It is also possible that he is a well-known personality.<\/p>\n<p>Read the following sentence.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My sister is married to Uday, <b>the playback singer<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this case, you are talking about a well-known singer and that is why you use article <b>the.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Now compare this with the following sentence.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My sister is married to Uday, <b>a singer<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this case, you don\u2019t expect the listener to know who Uday is and that\u2019s why you use the article <b>a.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tagore, <b>the writer<\/b>, was also a great painter. (Here we use <i>the writer<\/i> because we are talking about a well-known personality.)<\/li>\n<li>She introduced me to Aravind, <b>a painter<\/b>.
