We prefer eastern, southern<\/i> etc when we are talking about rather indefinite areas, and east, south<\/b> etc. for more clearly defined places.<\/p>\n

  • The west <\/b>side of the house (NOT The western side —)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Capital letters are used at the beginning of East, Eastern, South, Southern <\/b>etc when these come in official or well-established place names.<\/p>\n

    • South <\/b>Africa<\/li>\n
    • Middle East<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      In other cases, adjectives and nouns normally begin with small letters.<\/p>\n

      • There is a strong north<\/b> wind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        In place names, the use of East, Eastern, North, Northern <\/i>etc is often just a matter of custom, with no real reason for the difference.<\/p>\n
