It is used mainly in questions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you <b>ever <\/b>wish you were rich? (= at any time)<\/li>\n<li>Have you <b>ever <\/b>been to England? (= at any time up to the present)<\/li>\n<li>He has been unhappy <b>ever <\/b>since he left home. (= at all times)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Ever and always<\/h3>\n<p><b>Ever <\/b>is not normally used to mean <i>always<\/i>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I shall <b>always <\/b>remember you. (= NOT I shall ever &#8212;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But note that <b>ever <\/b>means <i>always<\/i> in a few expressions like <b>forever, ever since, ever after <\/b>and <b>Yours ever. <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I will love you<b> forever. <\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Yours ever. <\/b> (ending a letter to an intimate friend)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Use<\/h3>\n<p><b>Ever<\/b> is used mainly in questions. It is also possible in negative clauses, but <b>never<\/b> is more common than<b> not ever. <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you <b>ever seen <\/b>a whale?<\/li>\n<li>I <b>don&#8217;t ever <\/b>want to talk to him again. (OR I never want to talk to him again.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Ever <\/b>is also used after<b> if <\/b>and other words that express a negative idea (like hardly or nobody)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Nobody ever<\/b> visits them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Ever in affirmative clauses<\/h3>\n<p><b>Ever <\/b>is used in affirmative clauses after superlatives and <b>only. <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He is the <b>oldest man ever <\/b>to have climbed Everest.<\/li>\n<li>She is the <b>only woman ever <\/b>to have won this award.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Ever and before<\/h3>\n<p><b>Ever <\/b>and <b>before <\/b>can both be used to mean <i>at any time in the past<\/i>, but there is a slight difference. <b>Before <\/b>refers to a present event, and asks whether it has happened at another time; <b>ever <\/b>does not refer to a present event.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you been to England <b>before? <\/b> (The hearer is probably in England.)<\/li>\n<li>Have you <b>ever been <\/b>to England?
