Every<\/b> is a determiner. It is normally used before a singular noun.<\/p>\n

I have read every book <\/b>on that shelf. (NOT — every books –)Every<\/b> refers to all or each one of a group without exception.<\/p>\n

  • Every boy<\/b> in the class passed the test.<\/li>\n
  • He enjoyed every minute <\/b>of his holiday.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Every and every one of<\/h3>\n

    We use every one of <\/b>before an object pronoun (us, them) or a determiner (the, this, my). The pronoun or noun is plural, but a following verb is singular.<\/p>\n

    • Every one of us <\/b>wants to go.<\/li>\n
    • Every one of the children <\/b>was crying.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Not every<\/h3>\n

      To negate every, <\/b> we normally use not every. <\/b><\/p>\n

      • Not every <\/b>kind of bird can fly. (More natural than Every kind of bird cannot fly.)<\/li>\n
      • Not everybody <\/b>was amused.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        A pronoun or a possessive referring back to every <\/b>can usually be either singular (more formal) or plural (less formal).<\/p>\n

        • Every one of them <\/b>was told to bring his\/her\/their <\/b>textbooks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Every with plural nouns<\/h3>\n

          Every <\/b>can be used to indicate regular intervals of space and time. It is then followed by a plural noun.<\/p>\n

          • Buses run every ten minutes. <\/b> (That is six per hour)<\/li>\n
          • Plant trees every twenty yards. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Each and every<\/h3>\n

            Each<\/b> is used to talk about two or more persons or things. It refers to the individual members of a group when their number is definite and limited.<\/p>\n

            • She had a child holding on to each hand. <\/b> (NOT — every hand.)<\/li>\n
            • Each of the six boys<\/b> was given a prize.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Every <\/b>is used to talk about more than two persons or things. It refers to the whole group.<\/p>\n

              • Every chair <\/b>in the hall was occupied.<\/li>\n
